Do goats eat wisteria?

Yes — browsed under herder management.

Escaped wisteria vines in bloom

Escaped wisteria is a woody strangler that can pull down fences and trees. Goats browse the leaves and vines readily and are regularly used to reclaim wisteria-swallowed ground.

The management note: wisteria's seed pods and seeds contain compounds that can upset livestock in quantity, so herders time and manage grazing (foliage-stage browsing, diet variety on site) rather than turning goats loose on pod-heavy vines. This is routine herd management — it's part of the site walk we do before every project.

As with all woody vines, repeat defoliation is what kills it: each pass drains the root system's ability to resprout.

How control works: Foliage-stage browsing with diet management; repeat passes for root exhaustion.
